It was an absolute honor for us at The Franchise Montreal to welcome someone who has already touched the hearts and minds of many people across this country. Luca "Lazylegz" Patuelli may have started off as an Internet curiosity, as many marveled at how someone on crutches can perform his style of breakdance. But as his videos soon went viral on YouTube, Lazylegz stepped onto a bigger stage when he was part of the opening for the 2010 Paralympic Games in Vancouver.
How can someone who was born with Arthrogryposis (a rare muscle disorder that limits motion in the joints), dance at the level that allowed him to move on to the final qualifying stage at So You Think You Can Dance Canada? How did he have the will to battle not only his disease, but also Scoliosis (that he was later diagnosed with at the age of 8), and still put on a performance for the judges at SYTYCDC that brought them to tears? (see below)
In our interview with Luca Patuelli, he opens up to us about what Montreal and its hip-hop culture meant to him when he moved back to the city, and how the lessons he learned on the streets helped make him the man that he is today. He talks about the amazing work he is doing in bringing dance to kids locally, as well as what life lessons he is able to pass on to the kids who now look up to him as a role model.
