Riley Cote on Painkillers in the NHL

Written by Gary "Rumble" Whittaker. Posted in Podcasts - Spotlight Montreal

Former NHL brawler with the Philidelphia Flyers and currently assistant coach of the Adirondack Phantoms health and nutrition activist, Riley Cote joined Gary Whittaker and Nick Murdocco on THE TEAM 990 this morning. People are still trying to make sense of how 3 NHL players who were still relatively young and who should still have been happy living the dream of playing or having played in the NHL, could have taken their own lives within such a short timespan of each other. We have already interviewed "enforcers" on The Franchise Weekend Morning radio show (TEAM 990 in Montreal) who have spoken out about how they have felt and continue to feel "abonanded" by the NHL and NHLPA, but more stories continuing to surface which delve into an even darker side: Painkillers and how prevalent they are in the NFL. Riley Cote was very outspoken in a recent Globe and Mail article by Sean Gordon and Allan Maki about how so many hockey players are getting hooked on perscription medication, and he provided us with an equality candid and open interview.

Key Highlights:

  • Hockey players are using highly potent painkillers which are not only masking physical pain, but mental pain as well.
  • On why hockey players are choosing to mix those painkillers with alcohol despite the warning labels on the bottle.
  • Up until now, it is his opinion that the fact that 3 "enforcers" have passed away is purely coincidental. The problem is widespread and includes offensively skilled players as well
  • How and when NHL players are most likely getting access to painkillers
  • Many players are being perscribed painkillers despite not having any need of them
