VANCOUVER GETS A BIG SURPRISE FROM THE UFC
The Ultimate Fighting Championship’s biggest draw is heading to Vancouver in June. Former UFC heavyweight champion, Brock Lesnar, will headline UFC 131 on June 11th.
UFC president Dana White confirmed Lesnar’s bout for Vancouver on February 8th in an interview with Mauro Ranallo on “The MMA Show” in Toronto. Although the venue hasn’t been confirmed, the Rogers Arena (formerly General Motors Place) is the expected location.
The hulk-like Lesnar will square off against knockout machine, Junior dos Santos, who is undefeated inside of the Octagon with six wins and five by knockout.
The two heavyweights were announced as opposing coaches for season 13 of The Ultimate Fighter. The welterweight season is set to debut on March 30th on Spike TV. The finals of the show will be on June 4th, one week before Lesnar and dos Santos square off.
Originally dos Santos was supposed to fight UFC heavyweight champion, Cain Velasquez, but a shoulder injury forced Velasquez with withdraw. Now the winner of Lesnar and dos Santos will meet the champ at a later date.
In 2010, Lesnar headlined two UFC pay-per-view cards, which drew over a million buys and became the first man to have multi-one million pay-per-view buys in a single year since Mike Tyson did it in 1996 with three.
In his last bout, Lesnar lost the UFC heavyweight championship to Velasquez in an embarrassing first round stoppage at UFC 121.
After his loss, an odd moment played out with the World Wrestling Entertainment’s “The Undertaker” (Mark Calaway), who was sitting cage side.
As Lesnar walked passed him, the two exchanged looks and Calaway said, “You want to do it?” -- implying to fight him. Lesnar, however, did not respond and Internet message boards exploded with what the back-story between them was.
However, it turns out it was a clever ploy to try to get Lesnar to wrestle at WWE’s 2011 Wrestlemania against Calaway. Dana White has publicly said he will not allow Lesnar to participate at Wrestlemania while he’s still under contract with the UFC.
