Valimaki - TFC's CHAMP (Updated Commentary)? Rest of TFC 9 Results
It was supposed to be a night to compete for a championship belt for Quebec's Martin Désilets. The Team Legion fighter was supposed to take on TFC's current Light Heavyweight champion Victor Valimaki, but Valimaki reportedly spent his night in hospital due to kidney problems as a result of cutting too much weight too quickly. This marks the 2nd time this year Valimaki has had a match cancelled due to him not being able to make weight for a fight*. Désilets wasn't going to go all the way to Edmonton without stepping into the ring, and was joined by TFC President Mark Sinclair and Tim Hague. You have to think that Mark Sinclair was disappointed by the lack of professionalism shown from the first ever TFC champion. Perhaps that is why he agreed with Désilets' assertion that Valimaki make his way to Montreal on February 27th to face Désilets in Team Legion's home province.
For a professional fighter not to make weight, that is unacceptable. For a champion to not be able to properly manage cutting weight, that is inexcusable. The Franchise does put a fighter's health above all else, which is why we hope Valimaki takes the appropriate steps in getting guidance on how to properly and safely cut weight. MMA can be a brutal enough sport without having fighters do needless harm to themselves.
We also hope that fans of Valimaki can support their fighter without having to resort to juvenile and ignorant comments about Désilets Francophone heritage**. "Stress" Désilets was ready, willing, and able to put on a show for TFC fight fans and give them their money's worth. Valimaki was not.

* This was an error on my part. Victor Valamaki had in fact made weight, and this should have been worded something to the effect of, "this marks the 2nd time this year that Valamaki has had to pull out of a fact due to weight related issues".
** This comment was to the fans of Victor Valamaki only, and not to the fighter himself. As Victor Valmaki pointed out to me in a note, his "father was born in Montreal".
Two other points were brought up by the TFC LW Champion, which I will "get my facts straight" before commenting further. Seems like the Champ? wants to go toe to toe with The Franchise...not a problem. He was able to slip and counter a couple of my body shots, but I expect yet another victory when the final bell has sounded.
