UFC and GSP to hit Montreal, and not Toronto, Next!
Score this one for Montreal! Ariel Helwani of MMA Fanhouse has received confirmation that the UFC will be back in Montreal for a 3rd time on December 11th (and 2nd time in 2010) for UFC 124 which will be headlined by Georges St-Pierre vs Josh Koscheck. Usually when it comes down to big business, Torontonians have had the upper hand for at least the last 2 decades. And while leagues line the NBA and MLB have teams in Toronto, and the NFL is moving regular season games to the city, Montreal still has a leg up when it comes to MMA. At least until 2011.
What I find most interesting is the timng of all this great news coming from the UFC towards Canada, every time this proposed ban of MMA rears its ugly head and starts to gain momemtum. When it was first announced that a group of Doctors in BC were going to propose to the CMA that the sport of MMA be officially banned, it was announced that MMA will in fact be made legal in Ontario, with events being held possibly as early as 2011. Now that the CMA voted in favor of banning MMA, the UFC announces that one of their biggest stars will be headlining an event in his home province of Quebec, and announcement that is sure to rally the support for the sport of MMA amongst fans and businesses alike.
Here is a video interview we had with Firas Zahabi, where we spend some time talking about Georges St-Pierre and his upcoming match against Josh Koscheck
