UFC 125 Edgar vs Maynard Results

Written by Gary "Rumble" Whittaker. Posted in Blogs - The Rumble

Las Vegas plays host to UFC 125 on New Year's day, and we have your results:

MAIN EVENT BOUTS
Frankie Edgar battles Gray Maynard a draw and retains his UFC Lightweight Championship )48-46, 46-48, 47-47). Fans hate to spend 25 minutes watching a great fight, only to find it end in a draw, but there was no other way to score it in my opinion. I don't know where any judges scored a 48 for either fighter. Edgar won rounds 2 and 4, and I gave him round 5 by virtue of Maynard having to actually beat the champ, and I don't feel he did that in a very close round 5. Round 1 was perhaps the most controversial, in that many debated how many points Edgar should have lost after being thoroughly dominated. I gave it 10-8 Maynard, making the match 47-47 on my scorecard as well.
Brian Stann def. Chris Leben by TKO at 3:37 of Round 1. Stann wanted to show he was tougher than Leben, and he sure did that in spades.
Thiago Silva def.. Brandon Vera by unanimous decision (30-27x2, 30-26). Bitchslap of the year as Silva humilates Vera in the 3rd round. Easily should have been scored 30-26.
Dong Hyun Kim defeats Nate Diaz by unanimous decision (29-28 x3). He promptly called out Georges St-Pierre in his post fight interview.
Clay Guida def. Takanori Gomi via guillotine choke at 4:27 of Round 2

PRELIMINARY BOUTS

Jeremy Stephens wins with early KO of the year candidate and wins over Marcus Davis at 2:33 of round 3. Given how quickly fighters are getting cut at lightweight or below, this has to be the last we see of Marcus Davis in the UFC. For now at least

Dustin Poirier def. Josh Grispi by unanimous decision (30-27x3)

Brad Tavares def. Phil Baroni by KO at 4:20 of Round 1

Diego Nunes def. Mike Brown by Split Decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29)

Jacob Volkmann def. Antonio Mckee by Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

Daniel Roberts def. Greg Soto by Kimura at 3:45 of the 1st round

A great way for the UFC to kick off 2011. Many people didn't put much stock into this card at all, and it absolutely overdelivered.
