UFC 118 Final Quick Results

Written by Gary "Rumble" Whittaker. Posted in Blogs - The Rumble

UFC 118 takes place in Dana White's hometown of Boston. This is a stacked card in which redemption will be sought after by former lightweight Champion BJ Penn, and honor will be fought for by MMA Hall of Famer Randy Couture. Here are your live quick results:

Main Card Fights (On Pay-Per-View):

-Frankie Edgar defeats B.J. Penn by unanimous decision (50-45x3) in the first defence of his UFC lightweight title.

* Despite BJ Penn showing flashes of superior skill albeit all too rarely, Frankie Edgar went into overdrive through the entire 25 minute affair. The fans may have started the night chanting for BJ Penn, but they ended the night chanting for Frankie Edgar. Not only is he now the undisputed lightweight champion, but he has earned the respect of the fans, BJ Penn and his naysayers.

-Randy Couture defeats James Toney by submission at 3:19 of Round 1

Toney's only chance was to land the big punch. It didn't happen

-Demian Maia defeated Mario Miranda by unanimous decision (30-27x3)

* this fight looked like a mismatch to me, and that's how it played out. Maia is just too skilled on the ground, and he can get get his cardio and striking even half as good as his BJJ, he would deserve another shot at the title.

-Gray Maynard defeates Kenny Florian by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

It wasn't pretty, but Gray "Bully" Maynard did what he had to do through the first 10 minutes to easily win rounds 1 and 2. Kenny tried to fight back in the 3rd, but it was too little, too late. Maynard wants a title shot, but I am not sure if Dana White was still awake to hear him.

-Nate Diaz wins by submission over Marcus Davis at 4:02 of Round 3

* Davis came out swinging but it was Diaz who drew first blood. Davis was simply not able to recover. This was a striking exhibition until Diaz took Davis to the ground in the 3rd, and laid down a choke that Davis refused to tap out of.

Featured Matches (On Spike TV):

-Joe Lauzon def. Gabe Ruediger by submission (armbar) at 2:01, R1

* Dominant win over a fighter who has not been ready for the world stage for a long time, if ever.

-Nik Lentz def. Andre Winner by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

* Nik did what he had to do to earn a victory, but did not impress despite beating a "name" in Winner

Undercard Matches (Non-Televised):
-Dan Miller def. John Salter by submission (anaconda choke) at 1:53, R2
-Greg Soto def. Nick Osipczak by unanimous decision, 29-28 on all cards
-Mike Pierce def. Almicar Alves by submission (arm lock) at 3:11, R3
