UFC 111 Results and Bonus Information

Not only did Georges St-Pierre dominate Dan Hardy through 5 rounds at UFC 111, but GSP continued to be a major draw for the UFC with an estimated 4 million dollars at the gate, where UFC 111 took place in New Jersey. Dan Hardy was not given much of a chance, not even from GSP who uncharacteristically broke from his routine pre-fight statements and say that he was looking to "finish" Dan Hardy. St-Pierre would have several opportunities to do just that, bending "The Outlaw" in unnatural positions, but try as he might, Hardy simply would not break. Unfortunately for Hardy though, MMA is not based on one's ability to withstand pain, but to inflict punishment, which is simply GSP was able to do systematically for all 5 rounds, earning him a unanimous decision (50-43, 50-44, 50-45).

In terms of what's next for St-Pierre, it has been made clear that the GSP camp wants a match up with Anderson "The Spider" Silva. They have made no secret of the fact that St-Pierre had added 10 pounds of muscle mass in an attempt to answer critics that he is simply not big enough to take on the Middleweight champion who has also been dominating at the Light Heavyweight weight class. But those plans may have been put on hold with St-Pierre not being able to finish Hardy despite being the overwhelming favorite. One potential candidate is Jon Fitch, who also won Saturday night at UFC 111, but his performance was less than boring and his opponent, Ben Saunders, was far less accomplished than Thiago Alves who was originally scheduled to face Fitch. That makes the UFC 113 matchup between Koscheck and Daley so important as a title contenders match.

Shawn Carwin was also victorious, and won an interim Heavyweight belt after 3:48 of round 1 over Frank Mir. This belt was made practically meaningless when it was announced that current UFC Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar had recovered from an illness he contracted in 2009, and would resume his MMA career this year. Dana White has to be more than thrilled with how his Heavyweight class is developing. It has been a long held tradition in combat sports that your Heavyweight champion is your best marketing tool. While Brock Lesnar is not a well-liked fighter, he is a major draw. Shane Carwin will not doubt be given a major boost based on his performance against former Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir, and the UFC also has Cain Velasquez waiting in the wings for his title shot.
