THE FIGHT FORECAST: ZAROMSKIS VS. DIAZ
Two championship titles are at stake this Saturday as Strikeforce gets 2010 underway. In the co-main event, woman's champion Cris "Cyborg" Santos will defend her belt for the first time since dominating Gina Carano last August. Headlining the Strikeforce Miami card is MMA's resident bad ass Nick Diaz and the head-kicking Lithuanian Marius Zaromskis. The bout will be for the vacant welterweight title.
Zaromskis' already wears the welterweight crown in Japan's Dream promotion and is seeking another title for his collection. In Marius' last three bouts, they have all ended by his modified "peacemaker", the head-kick. This will be Diaz's first shot at capturing champion gold in a major promotion. In his two previous bouts, Nick disposed of MMA legend Frank Shamrock and come-back kid Scott Smith.
Ready to fight anyone, anywhere and at anytime, Nick Diaz has a reputation for being an in-your-face brawler and is also blessed with an arsenal of submission skills. However, with Zaromskis' phenomenal striking, a ground fight may not be on Diaz's agenda. A foreshadowed stand up war looms. If Diaz is able to resist his urge to stand with Zaromskis and get the fight to mat, the fight could end quickly with a submission.
In 2009, Zaromskis exploded onto the MMA scene as the dark horse in the Dream welterweight tournament. This however didn't stop Marius from dismantling his foes in highlight reel fashion. Marius' breakout year has made him one of the most exciting and talked about mixed martial artist's today. Diaz needs to be wary of the deadly high-kicks of Zaromskis coming into Saturday nights bout, which surely he has scouted well in advance.
The Split-Decision: Unless Diaz is immediately rocked by Marius, I don't see him trying to take this fight to the ground. This well be a fist-for-fist and kick-for-kick fight. At any point, someone could go down but I think Nick's cocky style of brawling is going to have him staring at the rafters. Zaromskis' will catch Diaz in the second round via knock out (head-kick).
