The Fight Forecast: Jones vs. Vera

Written by Jordan Small. Posted in Blogs - The Rumble

The UFC's debut on the Versus channel delivers an intriguing, action-packed card that shouldn't disappoint anyone watching. The four bouts which will air on Versus are a knockout fan's dream as the eight fighters have a combined knockout victim list of 77. To say the least, these guys bring the hurt. In the main event, Jon "Bones" Jones, who many people consider the future of the 205 pound division is attempting to show that his hype is the truth. The person who disagrees with these claims was a former hot prospect himself in "The Truth" Brandon Vera. Both combatants know what's up at stake and the setback a loss would have. By far Vera needs this win more but try telling 'Bones' Jones that.

Having been in Jones' shoes, Brandon knows what Jon is experiencing and what a win over Vera would do for his career. This could be an advantage for Vera to use his personal high's and low's in MMA as a blueprint to expose certain area's of weakness. Whether it be mental or the physical aspect. Vera's world class Muay Thai striking will be the toughest test for Jones to overcome to date. Jones hasn't fought a striker as technical as Vera yet, which may come back to haunt him if the fight stays standing. A new found confidence in Vera's ground techniques could have Brandon switching things up should he see necessary.

Jones is one of the most talked about young prospects since his explosive win over Stephan Bonnar at UFC 94. His unique striking and unmatched strength instantly had fans buzzing him the next great champion in mixed martial arts. In his last bout, Jones threw TUF 3 alumni Matt Hamill around like a rag doll. The fight wasn't even close until an illegal elbow from a top position halted the fight and a disqualification on Jones was announced. It's safe to say the hype is real for the 22 year-old and this bout with Vera will answer where Jones stands in the UFC's 205 pound division.

The Split-Decision: This fight is suppose to be a striking match, however, I see it going to the ground. Vera's confidence on the ground will only get him in a world of hurt. Jones will out muscle Vera to the mat and impose a vicious ground and pound him. Vera's best bet is to stand with Jones and keep moving. Jones will earn an unanimous decision win over Vera.
