Team Bergeron VS The Franchise
I am going to lose weight. I am going to start working out or I am going to fall asleep trying...actually, I figured, "what better way to get motivated than to take advantage of my expanding list of friends who are involved with MMA!". Now, I had already started doing some amazing sessions with my friend Jeremy Rubin who conducts a great DABB workout program. However, as amazing as that program is, I couldn't punch anyone!
That is where Yanick Bergeron from Team Bergeron stepped in! I had last met him during Fight Quest 12, where I asked if I could go visit the much famed Team Bergeron gym and see how he produces some of the best strikers in the Province of Quebec. He was more than happy to accommodate, and after a couple of weeks battling "the lazies", I managed to get enough motivation to stretch into my pair of MMA shorts, lace up my still new boxing gloves and show Coach Bergeron what I was made of!
Jello. Apparently I am made out of a lot of Jello.
Coach Yanick Bergeron is absolutely when of the best trainers I have done a class with, and I have done a class with a lot of trainers. No one has started more gym memberships than yours truly! Yanick has so much knowledge of his craft, but more importantly, he has great vision and a ton of passion. He takes his time with you, but you can feel the ferocity from his gaze. He has a way of pulling you into his energy, making you share into his passion and love for the sport, and want to put together the intricate combinations and techniques he calls out. I was pushed to my limit, and I had a smile on my face the entire time.
And then Martin "The Hammer" Grandmont stepped into the ring with me. Here is a great fighter, with a 10-5 MMA record, who has fought the likes of Sam Stout, Mark Holst, Chris Clements and Tyler Jackson. Now he was facing his BIGGEST foe to date: Gary Whittaker. All I can say about our round of sparring is that, if I had any power in the one punch I landed, it would have been a quick round.
Undaunted by my performance against Grandmont, Guillaume "Showman" Lamarche jumped into the ring next. By now, the gym had reached an unprecedented level of excitement. Yanick Bergeron was quick to come in, and make sure we had an official start of the match, beginning with a stare down at the center of the ring. I saw fear in his eyes, as he stared down at me, but that could have just been my reflection. The match started to a flurry of punches. One sided. From the Showman. I'd like to say that the bell I heard was from the official timeclock, but unfortunately I think I only heard one a few minutes later after being picked up off the canvas. Good thing for me too, because Quebec MMA icon Stephane "Simba" Vigneault was on hand training the fighters on their ground game, and he too looked ready to pounce!
When all was said and done, I left Team Bergeron with a growing sense of respect (to match the growing sense of swelling) for a great gym, a great coach, a great system, and a great group of fighters. Both Rejean Groulx and Danny St-Gelais were on hand to work on their game-plan, and I look for a tremendous performance from both of those Team Bergeron prospects. Also on the card will be Team Bergeron's Christopher Boisvert against Team Legion's Kevin Morin, in a match that has been long overdue.
