Strikeforce Overeem vs Werdum Preview

Written by Gary "Rumble" Whittaker. Posted in Blogs - The Rumble

Hard core MMA fans have always had a soft spot for the Strikeforce brand, the little guys trying to make a name for themselves against the juggernaut that is the UFC. Now that Zuffa has not only acquired the Strikeforce brand, but have allowed “black sheep” like Nick Diaz, Josh Barnett and Paul Daley to continue under the parent company, these same fans can now finally have the dream matchups that have been blocked previously.  No more having to wait years for fighters like Jake Shields to take on the likes of GSP! Any fighter who can make an impressive under the Strikeforce brand gets their shot at the UFC, including a title shot as in the case of Nick Diaz.

MAIN EVENT

Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum

Synopsis: Overeem has not seen a fight go into the 2nd round since November 16th, 2007! While that is impressive, the list of opponents who have lost to Werdum have also been impressive, including Fedor, Antonio Silva, Brandon Vera, and Gabriel Gonzaga. Overeem has the distinct advantage with his  striking, while Werdum can end this fight with a submission.

Prediction:  This is a better Overeem that lost to Werdum in 2006, and I expect revenge to be a dish served with a cold KO.

CO Main Event

Josh Barnett vs. Brett Rogers

Synopsis: There was probably more drama in whether Barnett will pass his medicals, than any drama Brett Rogers will bring to this tough veteran and former UFC champion.  Another classic striker versus grappler which sometimes makes for great finishes, and other times makes for very boring fights.

Prediction:  Rogers will need to use his wrestling and take down defence if he is to have any chance against Barnett. Rogers may be big and strong, but Barnett is skilled enough to handle himself just fine.  Barnett by TKO (ground and pound).

K.J. Noons vs. Jorge Masvidal

Synopsis: Sometimes boxer KJ Noons is making his debut at lightweight. Assuming he can properly cut weight without it impacting his conditioning, Noons could be a devastating force at 155. Masvidal is good, but not great. That being said, it’s all about who is better on fight night

Prediction:  I think Masvidal will try and make this a stand up war, but with Noons coming off a loss to Diaz and wanting to make a big impression, it could be over quick. KJ Noons by KO.

Daniel Cormier vs. Jeff Monson

Synopsis: This is a classic test for an up and coming undefeated fighter in Daniel Cormier, as he takes on a very experienced veteran who has his best days behind him.

Prediction: Monson is on an 8 fight winning streak, and he still has a lot left in the gas tank. This will not be an easy test for Cormier, but it is one that I feel will be won if he shows himself to be the better wrestler. Daniel Cormier by unanimous decision.

Here is the rest of the card
