Written by Jordan Small. Posted in Blogs - The Rumble

Jordan Small from The Fight Forecast, in collaboration with The Franchise, would like to debut the new ranking system of the MMA Power 25. Power Rankings are different than Top 10 rankings by division because they reflect on how busy a fighter is, title fights, upsets, significant wins, etc. These 25 mixed martial artists are shining the brightest as of August 8th 2010.

25.Chris Leben - 24-6 - UFC

Leben debuts at number 25 for his two-weeks-two-wins over Aaron Simpson (TKO) and Yoshihiro Akiyama (submission). This is an impressive accomplishment especially at the UFC level.

24.Marlon Sandro - 17-1 - Sengoku

Sandro is a beast at 145 pounds and should be up there in the talks with Jose Aldo. He's KO'd his last two opponents in under 50 seconds combined en route to becoming Sengoku featherweight champion.

23.Pat Curran - 11-3 - Bellator

Curran won season two of the Bellator lightweight tournament defeating Roger Huerta along the way.

22.Sarah Kaufman - 12-0 - Strikeforce

Canadian Sarah Kaufman defended her Strikeforce title in style with a slam KO finish over Roxanne Modafferi improving her record to 12-0.

21.Gilbert Melendez - 18-2 - Strikeforce

Melendez picked up the biggest win of his career when he out pointed Shinya Aoki last April and retained his lightweight title.

20.Ben Askren - 6-0 - Bellator

Askren won season two of Bellator's welterweight tournament defeating Dan Hornbuckle in the finals.

19.BJ Penn - 15-6-1 - UFC

Tough loss for BJ Penn as Frankie Edgar took the UFC lightweight crown from him.

18.Fedor Emelianenko - 31-2 - Strikeforce

The former top heavyweight had his first real loss against Fabricio Werdum in June. Emelianenko will need an strong comeback in his next fight against rumoured opponents Antonio Silva, Fabricio Werdum and Alistair Overeem to stay in the Power 25.

17.Junior dos Santos - 12-1 - UFC

Another JDS fight and another impressive win. Junior is rising the ranks and will face the winner of Lesnar and Velasquez for the title.

16.Nick Diaz - 22-7 - Strikeforce

Diaz has been a force to reckon with. In his last two bouts, he finished Dream standouts Hayato Sakurai (submission) and Marius Zaromskis (TKO) in the first round.

15.Cain Velasquez - 8-0 - UFC

Cain Velasquez proved he was ready for a heavyweight title fight when he KO'd legend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the first round. He fights Brock Lesnar for the title in October.

14.Chael Sonnen - 24-11-1 - UFC

After dominating the fight with Anderson Silva, Chael fell victim to an armbar in the fifth round and lost a certain win.

13.Jon Jones - 11-1 - UFC

Jon Jones has been dominating every opponent he has faced. At UFC Versus 2, he TKO'd veteran Vladimir Matyushenko and called for a top 5 light heavyweight for his next challenge.

12.Brock Lesnar - 5-1 - UFC

A rough return for Brock in the first round against Shane Carwin but he rebounded with a very nice submission finish in the second. Lesnar will face Cain Velasquez in October.

11.Mo Lawal - 7-0 - Strikeforce

King Mo took down the young phenom Gegard Mousasi time and time again in their April bout and the King was crowned Strikeforce light heavyweight champ. Lawal's next bout will be August 21st against Rafael Cavalcante.

Werdum became the first man to beat Fedor without controversy. Cementing his place in history along side Buster Douglas.

9.Rashad Evans - 15-1-1 - UFC

Since losing the light heavyweight belt to Lyoto Machida, Evans has come back into title contention with solid wins over heavy hitters Thiago Silva and 'Rampage' Jackson. Evans is expected to fight Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua for the belt in 2011.

8.Josh Koscheck - 15-4 - UFC

Koscheck has reeled off three straight victories en route to becoming the number one contender to GSP's belt. Kos will coach Season 12 of The Ultimate Fighter along side GSP, which airs this fall.

7.Cristiane Santos - 10-1 - Strikeforce

'Cyborg' is the most dominant woman in MMA today. In her last bout she destroyed Jan Finney and won in the second round via TKO but if you were watching at home the fight should have been called in the first. It may be a while before anyone comes close to touching the 25-year-old Chute Boxe member.

6.Anderson Silva - 27-4 - UFC

In the last few years, Anderson has either been spectacular to watch or a complete dud. In his last fight with Chael Sonnen, he was taken to the limits and came a few minutes away from losing his middleweight title. However, a fifth round armbar saved him. Anderson holds the UFC record for most consecutive wins at 12 and most title defenses at eight.

5.Jake Shields - 25-4-1 - UFC

Newly signed to the UFC, Jake Shields will be squaring off with Martin Kampmann in his UFC welterweight debut. In his last bout, Jake defeated legend Dan Henderson by unanimous decision defending his former Strikeforce middleweight title. Shields is currently on a 14-fight win streak.

3.Jose Aldo - 17-1 - WEC

Aldo has been carving up the WEC featherweight division since his arrival in 2008 going 7-0 in the promotion. Jose also headlined the WEC's first ever pay-per-view this year where he defeated long time poster boy Urijah Faber by unanimous decision.

2.Georges St-Pierre - 20-2 - UFC

Since losing to Matt Serra in 2007, GSP has walked through every opponent put infront of him to reclaim his title and defend it in dominating fashion. Georges is set to coach season 12 of TUF with Josh Koscheck, who he will fight in December in a rematch of their 2007 bout in which GSP won by unanimous decision.

1.Mauricio Rua - 19-4 - UFC

'Shogun' made sure his rematch with Lyoto Machida didn't go to the judges by KO'ing him in the first round at UFC 113. Rua argueably won the first fight between the two but cemented himself as the first to solve the previously undefeated Machida. 'Shogun' is expected back in early 2011 to face off with former champ Rashad Evans.
