MARLIES COMEBACK TO SPOIL BULLDOGS HOME OPENER

Written by Jordan Small. Posted in Blogs - The Rumble

The Toronto Marlies (1-2-0) score four unanswered goals en route to defeating the Hamilton Bulldogs (1-1-0) 5-3.

The Bulldogs were on the ropes during the third as the Marlies poured on an offensive assault. Hamiltion’s head coach, Randy Cunneyworth says a lack of energy and execution was the reason for the loss.

“We ran out of gas,” says Cunneyworth. “We couldn’t withstand the pressure… I think the difference in energy levels had something to do with it.”

Through the first two periods, the Bulldogs were the hungrier and fresher looking team. Hamilton had a 3-1 lead late in the second but with less than 30 seconds left in the period, Nazem Kadri netted his first of the year. A routine glove catch was fumbled by Bulldogs goalie, Robert Mayer (1-1-0), and the goal swung the momentum going into the third.

“We had things going in our direction but just lost that groove,” says Cunneyworth. “Our focus was not to go into that third period with giving them any energy. We wanted the energy, we wanted to get it right back and I thought we did that on points but we couldn’t sustain it.”

Hamilton’s late collapse overshadowed an impressive outing by Bulldog centre, Ben Maxwell, receiving the first star of the game and scoring twice in defeat.
