Late Heroics Help Alouettes beat Winnipeg 44-40

Written by Gary "Rumble" Whittaker. Posted in Blogs - The Rumble

To quote LL COOL J, "Don't call it a comeback!". The Montreal Alouettes went into Winnipeg to face the Blue Bombers in what should have been a cakewalk (hmm....cake...). Problem is, Steven Jyles and the Blue Bombers apparently did not get the memo, and they showed how a 3-8 team can be 5 games under .500, but still somehow have scored more points for, than against. Simply put, Winnipeg loses the close ones, and the Alouettes kept this game close before retaking the lead for good with only 78 seconds left to play for a 44 to 40 victory. Ben Cahoon was instrumental on that scoring drive, where he also just happened to make his 1000th reception in his illustrious CFL career. With Watkins watching from the sidelines, his arm in a sling, the Alouettes needed the rest of their receiving core to step up, and that they did with Richardson, Bratton and Green combining for 18 catches and 333 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Avon Cobourne was the unsung hero in last night's game, as he not only provided Calvillo with 5 catches out of the backfield to go along with his 74 yards on the ground, but he showed why he is the league's best pass blocking running back, in helping stymie the Blue Bombers fierce front 7. You can also argue that the Alouettes were helped by an injury to Winnipeg's Greg Carr, who was making his CFL debut. He burned the Alouettes secondary twice with plays over 70 yards, and had amassed 185 yards and 2 TD's before going down to a leg injury in the 3rd Quarter.

The Alouettes are now 9-3, and will maintain at least a 2 game lead on top of the East Division. They will be travelling to Calgary in order to face the West Division leading Stampeders on Friday, October 1st. Calgary is coming off a 43-37 loss to Saskatchewan, but are back home playing the lowly BC Lions.

THE SCRUM:

The Canadian Press do their unbiased best in reviewing the game as well.

Adam Wazny of the Winnipeg Free Press opens with a "We Was Robbed!" line. I guess you can figure which side of the fence he sits on.

And Kirk Penton from the Winnipeg Sun is heartbroken over the loss.
