In Defence of Bob Gainey
Before sending you to this great article I read on one of my favorite blogs covering the Montreal Canadiens, I wanted to add to a long list of great arguments put forth by the blogger JT, who looks primarily at the recent moves made by Bob Gainey in 2009.
When Bob Gainey took over for the 2003/2004 season, the Montreal Canadiens were not even a .500 hockey club, and were on the verge of becoming the same kind of laughing stock that have embarrassed Maple Leaf fans for decades. Gainey made impact moves very quickly, including acquiring Kovalev for what was a long long of draft "prospect" busts. Under Gainey's 5 year plan, the Canadiens ended up in first place in the Eastern Conference, and were poised for another serious run at the Stanley Cup. Gainey kept the core team in tact, and added what most pundits felt were the key missing ingredients to what would bring the Canadiens their 25th Stanley Cup when he acquired Tanguay and Laraque. Unfortunately, internal squabbles completely derailed the team, and Mr. Gainey decided to start from scratch going into the 2009-2010 season.
