Habs vs Rangers preview - A Chance for Redemption
With a win Friday night against Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils (Halak's first ever win against Jersey by the way), the Canadiens now find themselves within 2 points of their next opponent, the New York Rangers.
The Rangers were idle Friday night and hold a game in hand.
The season series is tied 1-1, but the Rangers have outscored the Canadiens 10-7, thanks to a 6-2 drubbing on January 17th. The Canadiens were actually up 2-0 in that game, but just collapsed from the 2nd period onward.
Historically, Montreal holds a major edge in this "Original Six" match up, having a 315-184-94 regular season record against New York.
At this point, every game against a team battling for a playoff spot is a "must" win, but you have to think that coming off a win against the Devils, and a big loss against the Rangers amidst a streak of 3 consecutive, that the Canadiens' chance of making the playoffs sink or swim Saturday night.
The Canadiens do hold a win against New York at the Bell Center, where they play the Rangers again Saturday night.
Cammalleri loves playing New York, having scored 4 goals in 2 games against the Rangers.
Both Halak and Lundqvist were the starting goaltenders in both games. Obviously with 10 and 7 goals allowed respectively, neither of them have very good numbers.
Former Hab Chris Higgins did find his way back onto the score sheet against Tampa Bay, with a goal and an assist, however the team was shut out against Ray Emery and the Flyers. Of course, there was the much talked about fight between Carcillo and Gaborik as well. With Laraque being released, perhaps Gaborik may find the Canadiens more willing than ever to drop the gloves, and he may have a far better chance as well.
