Game 6 Preview: Canadiens vs Devils

Written by Gary "Rumble" Whittaker. Posted in Blogs - The Rumble

The Montreal Canadiens welcome the struggling New Jersey Devils on Thursday, October 21, 2010. This will be the 65th regular season meeting between this two teams, with Montreal leading the series 35-21-6. Montreal is coming off 2 straight wins which were played on consecutive nights in Buffalo and at the Bell Center versus Ottawa. New Jersey followed up an overtime win against Buffalo to lose there next two games which were also played on consecutive nights at home against Colorado and Boston.

The Skinny on the Habs:

The season will go the way Carey Price goes, which is a far cry from last season where the power play made all the difference.

So far this season, Carey Price has proven he is deserving of the number 1 spot, while the power play has ranked at the bottom in the league with only 1 goal in 17 opportunities.

The doghouse was a favorite topic of discussion last season, and it appears to be once again now. Lars Eller has joined Ryan O'Byrne, who are both holding the door open for Benoit Pouliot. PK Subban has escaped coach Martin's glare after several strong performances on the 3rd pairing with "Jean-Luc" Picard.

There was talk that Andrei Markov would be back this week, but that no longer appears to be the case.

After attempts were made by Benoit Pouliot and Travis Moen failed to spark the paring of Scott Gomez and captain Brian Gionta, who have combined for 2 goals and 4 points in 5 games so far, Tom Pyatt now gets his shot. Tom Pyatt beat out Mathieu Darche over the last 2 days of practise for the opportunity.

The Skinny on the Devils

If you said that New Jersey would be leading the league in goals against, even after 6 games, people would have thought you were crazy. Yet there stands 38 year old Martin Brodeaur with a 3.18 GAA and a .887 Save Percentage.

Rookie head coach John MacLean simply has no idea what to do with Ilya Kovalchuk, who has seen his linemates changes, and his own position change from right wing to left wing and back again.

And Because You Probably Care...

Here are how some of the notable former Canadiens are doing -

Blues - Jaroslav Halak - 4 Games - 2 wins, 2.21 GAA, .909 Save %

Blues - Matt D'Agostini - 3 Goals, +2, 6 shots

Panthers - Chris Higgins - 0 points in 4 games with 11 shots

Lightning - Dominic Moore - 4 Goals, 1 Assist, -1

Maple Leafs - Mike Komisarek - 1 goal, 2 assists, +1, 2 penalty minutes

Ducks - Saku Koivu - 2 goals, 1 assist, -3 in 7 games

Wild - Guillaume Latendresse - 2 goals, 1 assist in 5 games

Panthers - Sergei Kostitsyn - no points, -2, 10.42 average ice time in 3 games
