EXCITING OPENING ROUND CONCLUDES WITH CAPITALS-CANADIENS SHOWDOWN

Written by Press Release. Posted in Blogs - The Rumble

NEW YORK (April 27, 2010) -- The exciting, unpredictable and hotly-contested opening round of the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs reaches its dramatic conclusion Wednesday night when the Washington Capitals host the Montreal Canadiens in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference Quarter-Final series (7 p.m., ET, VERSUS, TSN, RDS).

This marks the Capitals' fourth consecutive seven-game series, one short of the record the Colorado Avalanche set with five straight Game 7s from 2001 through 2003. Washington has hosted each of its previous three series-deciding games, dropping a 3-2 overtime decision to Philadelphia in 2008 and splitting a pair of games in 2009: a 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers in the Conference Quarter-Finals and a 6-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Conference Semifinals.

The Canadiens will be traveling to a city other than Boston to contest a Game 7 for the first time since they captured the Stanley Cup at Chicago in 1971. Montreal also is attempting to overcome a 3-1 series deficit successfully for the second time in franchise history; the first was a victory over the Bruins in the 2004 Conference Quarter-Finals.

Nine players who dressed for the Canadiens' most recent Game 7, a 5-0 win over the Bruins in 2008, are still on the roster: forwards Tomas Plekanec, Andrei Kostitsyn, Sergei Kostitsyn and Maxime Lapierre; defensemen Josh Gorges, Andrei Markov and Roman Hamrlik; and goaltenders Jaroslav Halak and Carey Price.

Halak, who has yet to appear in a Stanley Cup Playoff Game 7, made 53 saves in Monday's Game 6 victory over the Capitals -- the third-most in a playoff game ending in regulation since the statistic was first officially recorded in 1968.

MOST SAVES IN NON-OVERTIME PLAYOFF GAME (since 1968)

Date        Score        Goaltender        Saves
5/24/1996        PIT 2 at FLA 5        Tom Barrasso, Pit        56
4/ 8/1980        TOR 3 at MIN 6        Jiri Crha, Tor        55
4/26/2010        WSH 1 at MTL 4        Jaroslav Halak, Mtl        53
4/11/1975        CHI 6 at BOS 4        Tony Esposito, Chi        52
4/26/1996        WPG 3 at DET 1        Nikolai Khabibulin, Wpg        51

Overall, 129 playoff series have gone to seven games since the NHL introduced the best-of-seven format in 1939. The home team has won 80 (.620).
