ECC 10 Breakdown and Weigh In Results

Written by Derek Leblanc. Posted in Blogs - The Rumble

For fans who think putting a mixed martial arts card is easy, don't say that to the promoters of Extreme Cage Combat (ECC).  After a number of changes , ECC 10: Demolition will take place tomorrow night at the Halifax Forum.  The main event sees Roger Hollett now facing Chris Peak form B.C.  The Hulk was supposed to face Fritz Paul but Paul pulled out two days before the weigh ins.  The promoters are still happy with the card, but they are a little stressed out.

"Rob (Walker) has been pulling his hair out for the last couple of weeks," says promoter Peter Martell.

"We always have people getting injured, scared, nerves, whatever happens. This is one of the most challenged ones we have ever had.  Every single fight except maybe one has changed in the last couple of weeks."

While things may have gone crazy for the promoters, it has been going well for most of the fighters with everyone making weight today.  The one fighter it did maybe stress out was local star Roger Hollett. It was going to be his debut at middleweight but it has been moved to light heavyweight for his fight with Peak.  While the fight may have changed, Hollett is still eager to get into the cage no matter who he faces.

"It does sort of sucks because the unknown thing comes into play, but on three days notice, I am just glad that I am still fighting," says Hollett.

"He (Peak) has fought some big names.  He is a gamer, I appreciate that.  I wouldn't really switch anything but where I don't  much about him, you are a little more tentative going in and watching and seeing what he is going to do.  I haven't seen any of his tenacity. You got to wait and see what happens."

While it may be hard for a fighter to know his opponent, it was hard for the promoters to scramble to find someone at the last second.  Matchmaker Rob Walker says he called around 30 people including Peak to take this fight.  Peak is no stranger to the Canadian mma scene.  He has fought he likes of Jason MacDonald, Denis Kang and Victor Valimaki.  While he may not be the favourite coming in, he does plan to give the fans something to remember.

"I think this could be fireworks.  That is what I am predicting that one of us will get knocked out," says Peak.

"I think that its a great opportunity to fight.  I have fought some of the best in Canada and Roger is one of those guys.  I can't wait to fight him.  It is a honour to get in there and trade punches with him."

The co-main event will see a rematch between Matt Macgrath and Dan Grandmasion.  The two fought each other last year at East Coast Fight Productions in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia with Macgrath winning in the third round by submission.  Before the fight it was a even contest which ended up being a great fight. The fighters had such a good matchup that both were joking around and smiling at each other after the both weighed in. Macgrath thinks the fight will end up being a little more different this time with the same result.

"I am going to stick to my game plan more and control him more on the ground," says Macgrath.

"There was a lot of stand up in that fight and that is more of his game and I got to do more of my game.  So take him down and ground and pound and look for a submission.

Since losing to Macgrath, Grandmasion has not lost a match since.  He is currently on a three fight winning streak, with all of those fights coming out of XMMA.  The odds may be against him though where Grandmasion has lost everytime he has fought in Nova Scotia losing to Macgrath, Jason Mackay and UFC fighter T.J Grant.  Grandmasion is happy to get rematch and is hope to have a repeat performance with the win coming his way.

"It was a good fight the first time.  Matt and I have known each other since one of the first times I came to Halifax," says Grandmasion.

"He is a great fighter, a great competitor.  We had a hell of a time fighting, we had a great time fighting.  I expect the same kind of fight tomorrow night.  We are going to go out and bang and entertain the crowd like we did that one time."

Besides the two big fights, ECC has a full line-up of fights ready to go.  We will see Tannaya Hantelman face off against Kate Roy.  We will also see the first ever super heavyweight fight in the maritimes when former Saint Mary's Huskies offensive lineman Bryan Jordan take on Jim Geddes.  Also making his debut will be former Halifax Moosehead Colby Macintyre along with Jeremy Josey and a lot more.
