Canadian MMA Content - TJ Grant Gets New UFC Deal, Jabouin is OUT of WEC 45, and Barone's Got a Point
Mark Hominick may have a better chance at not losing his 3rd straight fight for the WEC, now that Yves "Tiger" Jabouin is injured. The Franchise confirmed with Mitch Mayberger, Jabouin's manager, after the story broke on MMA Junkie. They are hoping to have him ready for the March time frame. Jabouin is coming off a great performance over top ranked Raphael Assuncao, where he lost by split decision.

UFC Fighter TJ Grant, who was basically in a "win and you are in" match against Kevin Burns at UFC 107, was awarded a brand spanking new 4 fight deal with the UFC after he scored a 1st round KO victory which also earned him KO of the Night honors. The Maritimer will no doubt have plenty of friends calling him up with advice on how he can spend the 65k he earned in bonus money.

And, in what is turning into a trend, I may have to retract earlier commentary I had on yet another fight at Wreck MMA. I had earlier revised my comments on the Holst - Khatib match after having looked at the video, and now I may be doing the same after reviewing Barone - Aupry. While I understand that the results of both are in the books and are not going to change, it has become clear to me that both fights had an early stoppage. That is not to say that the winners of either match would not have won the fight anyway, which they may very well have. Nor is it to say that Holst and Aupry were not already winning the fight, which they were. But, it is clear to me now, after having reviewed the video, that the referee (who was involved in both fights), clearly stopped both fights early. Now yes, there is always a concern with fighter safety, and the fact of the matter is, both Barone and Khatib had fallen awkwardly, as if knocked out. And yes, I was close enough to Anna Barone to see that her eyes did have that "glazed over" look to them, which very well may have been the case for Nabil Khatib as well, but I did not see it myself. However, the referee did not even wait to see what happened when either fighter hit the mat, as he was moving immediately to stop the fight from the moment both fighters starting falling to the canvass. While this may be standard for a boxing match, this is not how a MMA match is supposed to be officiated. MMA has come a long way as a sport, but it still has quite a distance more to travel. Athletic commissions need to ensure that their referee's understand the sport, and they need to have clear guidelines in place so that fighters know what they have to do ahead of time. I'm still struggling with this one, as I feel strongly about fighter safety. I also have to think about the main event with Sean Pierson, who was momentarily stunned early by a punch from Fabio Holanda, but came back to deliver a KO of his own. I think that referee positioning is key to finding that happy middle ground, between stopping a fight too early, and letting a fighter take several unblocked power strikes while prone.
