Calvillo Returning, Cahoon Retiring

Written by Gary "Rumble" Whittaker. Posted in Blogs - The Rumble

Great news for Montreal football fans, as the Alouettes announce that they will be bringing Anthony Calvillo to a new 2 year deal (TSN identifies it as1 year + an option). With only 4220 yards away from tying Damon Allen for the most passing yards in the CFL,and all professional football for that matter, you have to think that the only way his option is exercised is if he does not break the record next season. Calvillo has passed for less than 4200 yards only 3 times in his 13 year career with the Alouettes, with the 2 of those 3 season being his first 2 with the club.  Anthony Calvillo had shocked both TSN staff and fans who were still sober enough to understand his post game interview after their Grey Cup when he announced that he needed surgery to resolve a potentially life threatening situation. But doctors have given Calvillo a clean bill of health, so now the 8 time all-star and 3 time most outstanding player has nothing to do but figure out who can be his go-to guy now that Ben Cahoon has hung up his cleets.

A familiar face will be missing from the wide receiver core this season. Ben Cahoon announced his retirement from the Montreal Alouettes after 13 seasons which saw him eanr 2 most outstanding Canadian awards, 10 time eastern all-star, and 2 time Grey Cup most outstanding Canadian, among many of is accomplishments.  Sean Campbell of The TEAM 990 had an interesting anecdote of when Cahoon first started in the CFL under then coach Don Matthews. Matthews had told Calvillo of his plans to move Cahoon to a slotback, and Calvillo immediately did not agree with that decision, thinking that the diminutive player simply couldn't take the punishment. After 6 games, Matthews went back to Calvillo with an "I told you so". Well, since then, Cahoon has gone on to catch more passes than any other player in CFL history, and is also 6th in reception yards. The only question left for CFL would be, is Cahoon the best wide receiver in CFL history?
