Big Deal looking to beat Big name: Jimmo ready for Gouviea at MFC 25

Written by Derek Leblanc. Posted in Blogs - The Rumble

With each fight, the next match is tougher then the last. When you add a winning streak to it, it is just added pressure to keep it alive. Ryan Jimmo is a fighter who is in this situation. The Saint John, New Brunswick native will put his 12 fight win streak on the line as he faces Wilson Gouveia at Maximum Fighting Championship 25: Vindication Friday night in Edmonton. This is Jimmo's toughest fight yet but he is not worried.

“He is aggressive, pretty tough dude, pretty fearless,” says Jimmo.

“On the other side, I think he lacks heart and he is a little bit lazy. You know there is some good and bad to him.”

Gouviea is a UFC veteran who was recently cut by the Zuffa based promotion after a lose to Alan Belcher at UFC 107 in December. Gouviea is looking to get back to the big show and will be trying to make quick work out of The Big Deal. While Jimmo knows this can be the case, he thinks his opponent will lose if if he tries that..

“If he comes extra aggressive, we have a game plan for that,” says Jimmo.

“I know his gas tank in the past hasn't been exceptional. Well come give me that wave of aggression, we will notify it, we'll wait for you to gas out and we take advantage of you then. No matter what he does we will have a plan for it.”

With this fight, Jimmo has had a solid 14 weeks for training which has been the longest he has to prepare for in his career. He will also be looking to make a good impression with his last two fights being close decisions to Marvin Eastman and Emmanuel Newton. With the training camp for the Gouviea fight, he has been working out the kinks in his game to be ready to give the fans a good show.

“With this camp, I have had 14 weeks to train so I was able to plan my schedule out,” says Jimmo.

“I have had six weeks to expand my cardio out and four weeks to do maximum strength training. A three week period were I could pamper my wrestling and blend it into my standup better and do it properly. I have gotten the proper rest and won't have to panic into emergency mode when I get 5 or 6 weeks to prepare for the fight. I have had a nice slow build, in great shape and I will be able to work him when I am in there doing to extra preparation I have put into this.”

With this fight and the last few fights he has had. Jimmo's name has been thrown around as to when he will get the call from the UFC. Jimmo was on season eight of the Ultimate Fighter, in which he failed to make it into the house. With his winning streak now at 12, the question is coming more and more. While he does hope to hear that call one day. He wants to make the right decision when it comes to his life's work.

“I have mixed feelings on this,” says Jimmo.

“If I get the call if the opportunity is proper then I will except it. If I don't get the call then I go on and garner more experience. I am not looking pass Gouviea, say if I win and get the call. If I went now and fought the top 10 to 20 guys, it would be a hard fight for me. If I wait a couple of more fights and I bring my skills up more in a year or two and then I go in the UFC, then those top 10 to 20 guys I am going to dominate. I know if I go in there I can hang with a lot of guys, but right now I don't know if I 'm ready to go and be the best. If I get the call my opponents will depend on the circumstances to see if I take it.”

While Jimmo wants to work out his skills right now. He is definitely in one of the better organizations to get the kinks out of his armour. The MFC has deepen its talent pools in the last few years and has made big splash in the world of mixed martial arts. The company will be hoping Jimmo will make a big splash when they make there debut at the Expo Centre on Friday in Edmonton. While this will be The Big Deal's time to shine, even the promoters no it won't be easy.

“This will be Jimmo's toughest fight to date,”says MFC President Mark Pavelich.

“People think when they come to the Maximum Fighting Championship that they are going to get an easy fight but that is not the case. We are in the top three for mma organizations and tops in Canada. This will be a big coming out party for Jimmo. He can't be passive like he has been in his last couple of fights. There is one way Wilson Gouviea comes out and fights and that is aggressive.”
