Bellator MMA Makes Its Canadian Debut This Saturday
The “Wow Factor” is something unique not seen everyday. When Bellator Fighting Championships burst onto the scene in 2009 with back-to-back head-turning shows, word of mouth spread about the new mixed martial arts promotion.
This Saturday night’s card is eager to show why they’ve become the number two MMA promotion in just two-years. Canadian fans can watch live on The Score and U.S. fans on MTV2 at 9 p.m. EST. The event will feature the semi-finals of Bellator’s 2011 Summer Series featherweight tournament.
Catching the eye of fight fans were a rare inverted triangle choke out and stunning spinning back fist KO. Later events produced the rise of stand out champions like the dominant Hector Lombard, Eddie Alvarez and showman Joe Warren.
Bellator voyages north to Canada for the first time this Saturday night in Rama, Ontario at Casino Rama for Bellator 47. But will fans once again bare witness to another “wow factor” moment?
In the first tournament bout former Sengoku featherweight Marlon Sandro will faceoff against Jiu-Jitsu ace Nazareno Malegarie. During his tenure in Japan, Sandro was known for his blistering knockout victories in under a minute. Since 2009, five of Sandro’s six wins have come in the form of stoppage. He will be looking to bully Malegarie and look for an early KO.
On the other side of the cage, Malegarie was undefeated in MMA sporting a 19-0 record until losing to wrestler Daniel Straus in March. Malegarie should use his strong submission base to try and control and submit Sandro or at the very least put him in uncomfortable predicaments throughout the fight. Sandro has experienced trouble with submission artists in the past.
In the second tournament bout former lightweight contender Pat Curran will have his second fight at featherweight against Sengoku and Cage Rage vet Ronnie Mann.
Like a lot of successful MMA fighters today, Curran’s base is wrestling. For this fight Curran should utilize the same strategy he used against Roger Huerta at Bellator 17. Keeping him guessing with an assortment of strikes followed with takedowns that resulted in a unanimous decision win.
Mann is on a four-fight winning streak including a pretty KO over Adam Schindler in his last outing. The Englishman is a technical boxer but the majority of his wins have come in the form of submission. He should be comfortable wherever the fight may go.
The show will also feature Canadian fan favourite Chris Horodecki against the So Cal Kid Chris Saunders in a Jim Everett nightmare match.
Horodecki is more experienced and has faced a lot better competition than Saunders. However, it can be a blunder should Horodecki take him too lightly. If Horodecki plays it smart, he is the outright favourite to win.
In the final bout of the main card the big boys are set to square off. Forty-year-old Neil Grove will take on former Ultimate Fighter alumni Zak Jensen.
Both men pack a punch and all of their wins have come by KO or submission. It looks like the game plan is either go big or go out needing assistance.
This event was originally headlined with a featherweight title fight between Joe Warren (c) vs. Patricio “Pit Bull” Freire. However, Freire was forced to withdraw in early July due to a broken hand.
Main Card
Pat Curran (14-4) (4-1 BFC) vs. Ronnie Mann (20-2-1) (2-0 BFC) – Featherweight 145 lbs.
