Belfort Out; Silva Still Expect to Fight
The highly anticipated title fight is off. The UFC is confirming that middleweight challenger Vitor Belfort has withdrawn from his UFC 112 bout due to a shoulder injury. middleweight kingpin and pound-for-pound great Anderson Silva is still expected to fight at UFC 112 at 185 pounds.
All eyes are on number one contender Chael Sonnen who will most likely step in for Belfort. UFC 112 is taking place on April 10 in Abu Dhabi, however, Sonnen has been medically suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission following his victory at UFC 109. Chael was issued a no contact in training until March 9 and suspension until March 24.
Sonnen doesn't have a lot of time to train for April 10 but the self proclaimed "toughest middleweight in the world" certainly should be up for the task.
If Sonnen turns down the fight, other challengers could include Damien Maia, Yoshihiro Akiyama, Alan Belcher, Nate Marquardt and Yushin Okami.
Belfort was training with his injury but wasn't making progress in his recovery. It was at this time Vitor and his camp decided to call off the fight and live to fight another day. Belfort posed as the most dangerous threat to Silva since Dan Henderson about two year earlier.
