Als Win 39-17 over Winnipeg, but at what cost?

Written by Gary "Rumble" Whittaker. Posted in Blogs - The Rumble

So yes, the Montreal Alouettes dominated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers by 22 points last night at Percival Molson Stadium, winning 39-17, but Als fans can be sure that they would have given up 21 of those points if it meant not seeing future HOF QB Anthony Calvillo go down to what was later described as a rib injury in the 2nd Quarter. Calvillo and the Alouettes were dominating the Blue Bombers, having scored 3 TD's, one by special teams, and the other two with emerging star SJ Green lunging both teams to get the 6 points. Leak did a decent job filling in for Calvillo the rest of the way by going 10 of 15 for 99 yards, but it was truly Brandon Whitaker (no relation to me) who kept the Bombers at by with 2 much needed rushing touchdowns after Winnipeg had brought it to within 7 points.

With the Alouettes going into a bye week, and not playing their next game until September 3rd against the BC Lions, all eyes will be on Calvillo and the medical staff to see if he can be back in game shape. Or, will the decision to rest Calvillo be made that much easier if Hamilton can beat the Toronto Argonauts to gave the Alouettes a 1 game cushion on top of the East?

As for last night's game, Jim Bender of the Winnipeg Sun felt that the Bombers were simply no match for the Alouettes, and he was very upset with the dropped balls which simply kept Winnipeg out of the game.

Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press thinks the game was "The Winnipeg Blue Bombers Guide to Throwing Away Football Games"

So, coach Trestman may be the coach of the year when he has the best QB in the game, but will he show himself to be deserving of such high praise if Chris Leak is his pivot?

Brandon Whitaker was a beast, on the ground and with his blocking. Even if Calvillo comes back, will Trestman use both him and Cobourne for extra protection?

Damien Cox continues to step up for this Alouettes defense.
