USL - Impact Salvage a Point in 0-0 Draw Vs Rochester Rhinos
Make that 4 losses in the last four games with zero goals in the same timespan for the Montreal Impact. The team headed into Rochester where they were looking to redeem their last outing in Minnesota that not only saw them go down to the Thunder 3-0, but an on field altercation involving Sandro Grande and Mauro Biello saw the former suspended by the team.
But unfortunately for the Impact, their coach, Marc Dos Santos, was ejected from the game at the 42nd minute after he, himself allegedly grabbed at the throat of Rochester Rhino, Tiger Fitzpatrick after they exchanged words during a Rhino throw-in situation. The Impact press release is calling it a "friendly touch". More to come. The score was 0-0 at the time and would also end up being the game's final score, leaving the Impact with a small consolation of one point for the tie.
Impact 'keeper Srdjan Djekanovic, in for Matt Jordan faced 17 shots and made a number of spectacular saves at the end of the second half to keep this game a 0-0 affair. Two stops in particular were most including a hard shot from midfielder Kwame Sarkodie that Djekanovic was able to save from point blank range while diving to his right. Then, midfielder Michael Ambersley tried to dribble around Djekanovic, but the Impact keeper stayed with him and made a desperation save with his hand near the goal line.
Djekanovic was playing his second USL match of the season, after having posted a 4-0 clean sheet versus Austin on May 17, at Saputo Stadium. This was his sixth career shutout in the USL First Division.
If you are one that is looking for answers or excuses, one thing is certain. The Impact did not necessarily field their "starting roster". 'Keeper Matt Jordan, defender Nevio Pizzolitto (suspended for one game), midfielders Sandro Grande (suspended indefinitely) and Rocco Placentino, as well as forward Eduardo Sebrango were sitting this one out.
And the injury woes still persist for defenders Cédric Joqueviel and Zanzan (thigh), as well as midfielder Patrick Leduc (foot).
Despite the negative trend this article and the Impact's future seems to be taking, with this tie and subsequent point earned, the Impact now has 18 points and has clawed into a seventh place tie with the USL Champion Vancouver Whitecaps in the USL First Division standings.
The Impact play their next game at home, Sunday versus Puerto Rico, at Saputo Stadium, at 3:30pm (Radio-Canada, CKAC Sports, THE TEAM 990, USLlive.com).
