Some said it couldn’t be done. Others said the Canadiens wouldn’t get anything more than a bag of used pucks. The Canadiens announced today that they have traded Sergei Kostitsyn to the Nashville Predators for forward Dustin Boyd, goaltender Dan Ellis and future considerations. But with both players being restricted free agents, when all is said and done, the Canadiens may end up wishing they got those pucks.
I will admit that regardless of whether Boyd or Ellis agree to terms with the Habs, the addition by subtraction of the younger Kostitsyn can only improve a seemingly unified room of returning players. And perhaps older brother Andrei will find a more consistent game now that he will not have to play “my brother’s keeper”.
Dustin Boyd is a centreman who actually cracks the 6 foot barrier the Habs have been searching for but would most likely be a replacement for Dominic Moore or Glen Metropolit on the 3rd or 4th lines, which will make things interesting if Maxim Lapierre agrees to the Habs’ qualifying offer and newly acquired Lars Eller can crack the line-up.
Dan Ellis had a cap hit of 1.8 milion last season and he signs with Montreal only if he’s willing to take a pay cut as the Canadiens will most likely have to offer Carey Price an amount in the 2.8 million mark in order to avoid having to deal with offer sheets and that does not leave much wriggle room unless another Kostitsyn or a higher priced D-man is moved between now and July 1st.
As a mentor for Carey Price (if he doesn’t actually usurp him and take over the number one spot… hey, it could happen) Ellis, 31, has had his share of bad decisions and drug and alcohol abuse in his younger days until he found religion and turned his downward spiral around in time to make it to the NHL. Sounds like an excellent role model to me.
It is to note that while there were also “future considerations” coming Montreal’s way in the trade, there were also some going the other way. More on that as it is made available.
