QMJHL - Montreal Juniors Drop 2 Points to the Halifax Mooseheads.
On paper, the Montreal Juniors should have cleanly beaten the last place Halifax Mooseheads. Halifax came into the Verdun Auditorium with every statistic inferior to that of the Juniors. As we know, however, statistics are only good for the sake of prognostication and fodder for debate.
On this particular evening, it was another case, however, of one team seemingly wanting it more than the other and specialty teams working for Halifax and not for the Juniors. Halifax was in dead last place on the power-play as well as on the penalty kill, yet they managed to go 2/3 on the man advantage and were able to stop Montreal on all 6 of their chances on their power-play opportunities. Halifax alos spread their scoring out among 10 of their players including thier leading scorer Jan Stransky, while a Valiant effort was put forth by a newlt formed Juniors line of Luke Adam, Nick Layton and Angelo Esposito who all figured in the three Montreal goals. The problem is that there was no secondary scoring to support the trio against a team that was dead last in Goals for and 3rd worst in goals against.
Montreal is presently in third place in the Telus West Division, behind Gatineau and Rouyn-Noranda, with a few games in hand and the next few against teams that they should also beat..on paper.
Please read on for the official Juniors game recap.
After a long trip on the road the Juniors took to the ice at the Verdun Auditorium for the first time in three weeks, facing off against the Halifax Mooseheads.
The first period saw a lone goal by Moosehead Gabriel Desjardins, good for his 7th of the season, with the Juniors were unable to generate any offence.
To begin the second period, the Juniors found themselves looking for their first goal of the game. Unable to convert on an early power play opportunity in the second, the Juniors gave up a second goal of the night, with Luke Adam in the penalty box. Alexis Piette tipped in Pascal Amyot's point shot. The Juniors would eventually get themselves on the board with Nick Layton converting on a Luke Adam pass. It was Layton's 21st and now leads the team in goals. The Mooseheads would restore their two goal lead only seconds later, as Jan Stransky beat Jean-Francois Bérubé. Nick Layton brought his team within one for a second time tonight, scoring his 22nd goal, while Angelo Esposito tied the game at 3-3 moments later.
With the teams tied, entering the final frame, Halifax restored their lead at 15:18 on a power play goal by Gerrad Grant, to bring the score to 4-3, which would end up being the final score in the Juniors loss.
The Juniors play again Friday night against Val-d'Or at 7:30pm, and again Sunday against Baie Comeau at 4:30pm both at home at the Verdun Auditorium.
