Playoff Road Gets Tougher For Montreal Impact

Written by Nick Murdocco. Posted in Blogs - Nick Murdocco

They say that all good things must come to an end, but the Montreal Impact could have asked for better timing.

After an inspiring 3 game winning streak the Impact swaggered into Miami to face the last place Blues looking to extend their streak, but late goals in both halves wound up costing Montreal 3 very important points in the USSF standings with this 2-1 loss Saturday night.

Had the Impact won and the Carolina RailHawks lost in Portland that same night, the Impact would pull even with Carolina in fifth place in the USSF Second division. As it turned out, the combination of a RailHawks tie and the Impact’s loss now has Montreal in 7th overall with Minnesota nipping at their heels.

The road to clinching a playoff berth does not get any easier for the Impact as only 3 games remain:

While Tampa Bay (19th of September) sits in last place in the USL conference, they are still 5 points better than the Miami team Montreal met Saturday and have scored more goals while letting in much less than their Floridian cousins. The Impact, if anything, face a tougher opponent in the Rowdies.

Their last 2 games of the regular season are against  the Vancouver Whitecaps (3rd overall) and Autin Aztex (2nd overall). While Montreal has had trouble against these two teams this season, one would think that both teams, who have secured themselves a spot in the post season will not take it easy on the defending champion Impact, especially the Whitecaps who lost to Montreal in last years final.

Read on for the official Impact game recap.
