Peter Byers Suspended by Montreal Impact
According to the Montreal Impact press release, they announced Tuesday the suspension of forward Peter Byers for a period yet to be determined, for breaching a team rule. That team rule is most likely punctuality related. Earlier this season, Byers had been sent to the club’s reserve team for one week, for similar reasons.
In the aftermath of the first occasion, coach Marc Dos Santos elaborated that Byers was late for a team practice, which he deemed inacceptable as Byers had no other responsibilities such as wife or children and that his only priority should be the team and his on field performance.
He also took that opportunity to send a sideways message to the rest of his team, stating that the games were won not only because of the individuals’ actions on the pitch, but as importantly, the actions and habits off the pitch too.
Technical director Nick De Santis, like Dos Santos, bears no grudge personally against Byers, who has a likeable personality, but feels this 2nd infraction necessitates a stronger penalty in order to maintain high team standards.
“Peter has to assume the consequences of his actions. He is a good person but it is not the first time he does this. As a professional club, it is important for us to clearly establish our principles and our philosophy.”
Not that Byers was tearing it up on the score sheet, but this can’t help the Impact’s present scoring woes, having to suspend one of their younger strikers as they set up to meet the Carolina RailHawks, this Saturday, August 7, in Cary.
