NHL - Habs Take a Bite out of the Big Apple 6-3, Now Can They Rake the Leafs?
The Last time the Canadiens faced off against the then mighty New York Rangers, they were home in Montreal, they had all their star players in the line-up and they skated away to a decisive 6-2 victory. Well this time, they were in the Big Apple, missing the likes of Price, Tanguay, Koivu and Higgins, to name a few, but the result was not much different. The Habs left the City that never sleeps with a 6-3 win thanks to the stepping up of the players who had to in the absence of the ailing starters.
People like Robert Lang who got his fist hat trick since 2003, including an empty netter, but more importantly, a highlight reel goal where he caught Mark Staal sleeping at the blue line. Alex Kovalev, who was pointless in the last 3 games, now had the "C" on his chest and played against his former team so it was only fitting that he would contribute with the games first goal. Max Pacioretty found Kovalev from behind the net and made a major league pass to AK 27 making it a goal and an assist for Max Pac in 3 games. Hey, even Guillaume Latendresse chipped in with a goal. Kudos to the 3rd and 4th lines for that matter who have been spot on for the last 2 weeks.
It also seemed to finally come together for both the Habs and Jaroslav Halak. In his last few starts, it seemed that when Halak was playing well enough to keep the Habs in the game, he was let down offensively. Conversely, on nights that the team seemed to be scoring go ahead goals, Halak would let in a few bloopers, cutting the wind out of the Habs' sails.
But on this night, Halak made the saves he had to make, facing 39 shots and the Canadiens never trailed in this game, culminating in a 3rd period 4 goal flurry that ensured the 2 points.
A special note for those still on the Habs' power-play watch: The Canadiens took their 27th place power-play unit to New York who was in 1st place on the PK and managed to going 2 for 4 including a 5 on 3 situation.

The Habs hope to continue this good vibe as they head back home this evening to face the Toronto Mapleleafs. In theory, this should be another 2 points for the Habs, which means all bets are off on this one. The Habs are not known to have a shining record in back to back game situations and the Leafs always manage to bring their AAA game when it comes to facing off against Montreal. If Montreal did not partake in the New York hospitality post game and if they take TO for what they are, a real NHL team that can beat any team on any given night, thay will skate away with another 2 points.
