Montreal Sinks Oceanic in Rimouski
The Montreal Juniors faced off for the last of their five game road swing and the Rimouski Oceanic were that last stop. While the Juniors scored first and never lost the lead, Rimouski made a game of it in the latter stages of the third period but Montreal held on and defeated the Oceanic 5 to 4.
Montreal jumped out to a quick two goal lead on Louis-Marc Aubry and Jeremy Gouchie’s goals, scored only a minute apart halfway through the first period. The Oceanic’s Petr Straka would respond with a goal of his own a minute after Gouchie’s goal.
In the second period, relative newcomer David Rose scored his second of the year and team captain Nicolas Chouinard notched his eighteenth of the year before Czech forward Jakub Koluk scored on the power play a minute later for the Oceanic. Chouinard would leave the ice in the third period with a lower body injury, but is expected to play in the Juniors next game against Victoriaville Sunday.
Juniors defenseman Xavier Ouellet stretched the lead when he scored his first of the season at 7:28 of the third on the power play, but Rimouski countered when Ryan Kavanagh scored one on the power play at 8:58. The Oceanic made it close with a late goal when Alexandre Mallet tallied at 19:08, but the Juniors held on for the 5-4 win.
Montreal netminder Jean-Francois Berube stopped 27/31 shots in the win. Oceanic goalie Philippe Tremblay made 28/33 saves in the loss. The Juniors record stands at 22-19-0-3 while the Oceanic record is 23-16-4-2.
The Juniors will return home Sunday when they host the Victoriaville Tigers at 4:05PM. The Val-d’Or Foreurs and the Saint John Sea Dogs will be in town on the 22nd and 23rd respectively before Montreal heads out on the road..
