Montreal Impact Surprised by Austin Aztex in Season Opener

Written by Nick Murdocco. Posted in Blogs - Nick Murdocco

The defending champion Montreal Impact kicked off their 2010 campaign in Austin Texas where they were blanked by the Aztex in their sophomore season by a score of 2-0.

This is not foreign territory for the Impact or their fans, however a game does not a season make.

Since 1993, the Impact has only won 6 of their last 16 season openers. Only once have they won the first game of the season since 2000, going 1-5-4 in the last decade. This has not, however hampered the Impact in winning 3 Championships since ’93 including last season which saw them only getting their first win during their 6th game played, en route the USL 2009 Championship.

The Impact realized very quickly that they are the team other squads will be ramped up to play against and this 1st loss served as a lesson.

"This match brings us back to reality. We won the championship last year and we have to start winning again this year," said Head Coach Marc Dos Santos. "When you are eager to win, you have to fight stronger than the opponent. Tonight, Austin fought harder than us so they deserve the win. We will not panic following this result and we will see what we can improve as of the next game.”
