Montreal Impact Rally to Defeat Syrian Selection 2-1
The Montreal Impact, playing Syria in an international friendly, did something they have not yet been able to do thus far this season; win a game after trailing at the half. Newcomers Ciaran O'Brien and Tyler Rosenlund, trying out with the team, took advantage of their last opportunity by figuring in both Impact goals.
“We knew that Syria was a team able to circulate the ball well and they caused many problems this way,” noted head coach Marc Dos Santos. “However, the club gradually came back during the match and adapted. We were able to build on our opportunities and this is what we need to do in our league games. I want to congratulate the two new players trying out [Ciaran O'Brien and Tyler Rosenlund] for their work and for helping us score.”
After being down 1-0 on an unlucky own-goal oin the first half when Hicham Aaboubou accidentally deflected the ball past 'keeper Srdjan Djekanovic on a Syrian corner kick, the Impact slowly took over control of the game and rallied with two goals of their own in the second.
Tony Donatelli scored the tying goal at the 66th minute after Ciaran O'Brien's shot was stopped by Syrian 'keeper Mosab Balhous, but Donatelli had the rebound in his sights and took a low shot that beat Balhous for the goal.
The Impact put the game away in the 78th minute after midfielder Tyler Rosenlund crossed tha ball to to Felix Brilliant, who leaped and headed the ball into the top corner, beating Balhous to his left.
Montreal now heads out on a two game road swing where they will face Minnesota and then Rochester before heading back home on July 19th to face Puerto Rico.
