Montreal Impact 2009 USL Champs!!

Written by Nick Murdocco. Posted in Blogs - Nick Murdocco

Montreal is, once again, the city of Champions thanks to the Montreal Impact.

The Impact took advantage of a penalty kick and a one man advantage from the 29th minutes to put this second game of a two game aggregate goals affair out of reach from a dumbfounded Vancouver Whitecaps team.

Impact USL champions

Whitecaps defender Shaun Pejic hauled down Roberto Brown at the 29th in the penalty area in what could have been a sure goal and got a red card for his effort. Tony Donatelli didn’t miss on the penalty kick opportunity and the rest is history.

The Whitecaps appeared to all but give up at this point, seemingly utterly devastated at the fact that they would have to overcome a two goals deficit in oreder to stay alive. The Impact would go on to score 2 more goals but Joey Gjertsen and eventual Playoffs MVP Roberto Brown.

Vancouver would score one goal (an Ansu Toure header) before the first half was over and that would round out the scoring for the game with the Impact winning 3-1, 6-3 on aggregate goals.

An incredible run for the Impact that saw them spend time at the bottom of the USL standings earlier on in the season, finish 5th and never see home field advantage until the final. Montreal had trouble  scoring goals and faced teams that didn’t give many up, however en route to tonight’s USL championship victory, this same team managed to score 14 in the 6 playoff games going 6-0 in that span.

This was the third championship with the Impact for veterans Mauro Biello and Nevio Pizzolitto, and a second for Adam Braz, Patrick Leduc and Eduardo Sebrango. This was Sebrango’s fifth career title in the USL-1, representing a new league record

Technical director Nick De Santis has now won a USL championship as a player, coach and now general manager of the Montreal Impact.
