Mathieu Schneider Speaks on Joining Habs.
The Franchise was on the 4:30 conference call in which Mathieu Schneider, presently in Los Angeles, took the time to answer a few questions regarding his return to Montreal.
It is during this call that it was also announced that Ryan O'Byrne has been sent down to the Hamilton Bulldogs.
When asked if he was surprised by the news that he had been traded to Montreal, Schneider responded "I'm not surprised, there were a lot of rumours floating around and with the situation in Atlanta, there was definitely a chance I would be traded. I have to say that I was thrilled that the team was Montreal. I can’t say enough about Montreal." Schneider also said that Montreal would have been a #1 pick for him.
Schneider had been following the Canadiens and saw the team struggling of late and when asked what he could do to create an instant impact he said he could contribute by doing what he has been doing for the past 15 years, "by moving puck, being involved at both ends of ice, work the powerplay, help the younger guys, show leadership."
Schneider had mentioned that he would be flying out of LA in time to join his new teammates in practice tomorrow afternoon at 3 PM in Montreal.
When asked if it felt strange to come back after winning a Stanley Cup back in '93, Schneider said "Obviously things have changed, but some of my best years were here in Montreal, the organization is the top in the NHL and all others aspire to be like them. It is a great place to play.
As he is a UFA at the end of this season, he was asked if he was in Montreal for a few months or did he have aspirations of playing longer. Schneider responded that he absolutely plans to play at least a couple of years. His body feels great even thoughhe had a few injuries (shoulder) earlier on in the season.
What about being coached by 2 ex teammates in Carbonneau and Muller? "I'm looking forward to it, they are great hockey guys and, who knows, maybe this is an omen."
The Franchise will also be present on the Bob Gainey call... more to follow!
