Koivu vs Kovalev: Gainey Has Decided

The Montreal Canadiens have reportedly made an offer to Alex Kovalev, according to a report from RDS. The Franchise hosts Gary Whittaker and Nick "L.A" Murdocco have long debated between Koivu and Kovalev, as to which one should stay, and which one should go, and it looks like Bob Gainey has sided with Nick. According to RDS, the offer was made on Sunday, making it only the 2nd offer presented to an unrestricted free agent that played with the Habs last season. Komisarek was initially thought to be on his way out, but sources close to the team believe the defenceman may not be leaving after all, since Gainey first approached him with a contract offer to stay with the team.

In other news, the Canadiens have also made qualifying offers to Higgins, Plekanec, Latendresse, D'Agostini, Stewart and Chipchura, who are all restricted free agents.

This leaves the Canadiens with 8 more UFA's, with the biggest question marks being Koivu and Tanguay. The two made just over 10 million dollars per year combined, and in my opinion, are both well worth the investment.

Most of the unrestricted free agents are not expected back, including Lang, Schneider, Brisebois, Dandenault and Bouillon.
