Juniors Split Weekend Road Swing

Written by Nick Murdocco. Posted in Blogs - Nick Murdocco

The Montreal Juniors who have been showing some positive signs of a wining season, were off to Baie Comeau and subsequently Chicoutimi for a weekend road swing that saw them get a shutout in the former, but get shut out in the latter.

Great goaltending by Juniors goaltender Jake Allen not only made the 3-0 win possible against the Drakkar, but kept the Juniors in it in their 1-0 loss to the Saguenéens.

The Juniors Achilles Heel in this early season appears to be the power-play which has yet to click on a consistent basis and knowing coach Pascal Vincent, it is something they will be addressing soon as Montreal is presently hovering in the bottom ranks of the QMJHL at 17.2% efficiency.

Having said this, the Juniors are still at positive 7-4 for the season and will be looking to add to this stat with 2 home games this week against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles on the 14th, followed by the Quebec Remparts on the 16th.

Read on for the two recent games’ recaps.

Montreal, October 10th, 2009 – After their 3-0 victory against Baie Comeau and concluding their strong homestand with a 4-1 record, the Montreal Juniors played the second game of a back-to-back series against Baie-Comeau Drakkar.

In the first period, the Juniors’ Trevor Parkes opened up the scoring at 9:54 when he netted his sixth goal of the season from Matt Provost and Matthew Brenton.  Baie-Comeau countered 35 seconds later when Guillaume Goulet scored his seventh goal of the season from Simon Olsson at 10:29 of the first period.

During the second period, Guillaume Goulet would strike again when he scored his second goal of the game at 07:11, the only goal of the period.

The Juniors tied the game just 33 seconds into the third period as Jeremy Gouchie scored his fourth goal of the season from Matthew Brenton and Trevor Parkes.  The Juniors took the lead when Trevor Parkes scored his game-winning second goal of the night, with just less than six minutes left.  Matthew Brenton and Jeremy Gouchie earned the assists.  Both Parkes and Brenton had three points each, while Gouchie had a goal and an assist as the Juniors swept Baie-Comeau in this series.  The Juniors continued their strong play as they are currently on a four-game winning streak.

Montreal goaltender Jake Allen made 34 out of 36 saves to seal the victory.  Baie-Comeau goaltender Simon Giroux stopped 20 out of 23 shots and took the loss.

Montreal, October 11th, 2009 – The Juniors put their four game winning streak on the line when they played against the Chicoutimi Saguenéens this afternoon, the second road game in two days.

During the first twenty minutes the teams were held to no scoring.  Both teams registered 7 shots on goal.

There was also no scoring in the second period.  Montreal had 11 shots on goal while Chicoutimi had 10.

In the last twenty minutes, the Saguenéens went on a power play when Juniors defenseman David Foucher took a penalty at 10:12.  The Saguenéens were able to capitalize on the power play when center Alexandre Lavoie scored his first goal of the season from Michal Hlinka and Dominic Jalbert at 11:12.  That was also the game winner as the Chicoutimi Saguenéens defeated the Montreal Juniors by a score of 1-0.  The Chicoutimi Saguenéens also stopped the Montreal Juniors’ four game winning streak.

Montreal goaltender Jake Allen stopped 28 of 29 shots.  Chicoutimi goaltender Christopher Gibson made all 26 saves as he earned the shutout victory.
