Game recap from the Montreal Juniors' press release:

Montreal, October 4th, 2009 – The Montreal Juniors Hockey Club, in association with Savaria, Canada’s leader in accessibility equipment, and the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) were pleased to invite junior hockey fans to a memorable event. On this night celebrating paralympic sports, the Juniors welcomed the Baie-Comeau Drakkar to the Verdun auditorium for their first regular season head-to-head.  As Stephane Hains’ team only had two regulation wins this season, the battle against Pascal Vincent’s was sure to be fierce. The Montreal Juniors finally came out winning this encounter between the two teams with a score of 3-0. The Juniors now have a record of 6-3.

The opening ceremonies, aimed at the promotion of paralympic sports, honoured members of the national sledge hockey team hoping to represent Canada at the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games. Those athletes attended the event: Graeme Murray, Jean Labonté, Benoit St-Amand and Dany Verner (sledge hockey), David Eng (wheelchair basketball) and Daniel Normandin (track and field).

Savaria, a Quebec company specialized in accessibility equipment such as stair chairs, platform lifts, residential elevators, and adapted vehicles, has enabled the organization of this memorable event by inviting dozens of organizations for disabled people, a first in Montreal’s junior hockey history.  Over 400 representatives were on hand as part of the 2568 spectators that participated in the evening.  "Savaria is proud to invite these hundreds of people and to enable this event that, in addition to encouraging our local paralympic athletes, inspires the population, and encourages those with reduced mobility to flourish by practicing sport," stated Savaria’s President and CEO, Mr. Marcel Bourassa.

During the first period, the Juniors were able to capitalize on a 4 on 4 situation against Baie-Comeau Drakkar when Juniors’ center Loïk Poudrier scored the only goal of the period at 13:55, which was set up by winger Guillaume Asselin and defenseman Alex Wal.

In the second twenty minutes, both teams stepped up the physical play. Juniors’ Alex Wall and Drakkar’s Guillaume Langelier-Parent squared off at 8:39. Meanwhile, Guillaume Langelier-Parent took an extra 2 minutes in penalty for taking Wall’s helmet off. The Juniors took advantage of the power play as Guillaume Asselin scored his first goal from a scramble in front of the net and recorded his second point of the night at 9:11. Assists were credited to defenseman Hubert Genest and Captain Nicolas Chouinard.

At the second break, sledge hockey players were part of a challenge where speed, agility and competition reached their highest level. During this intermission, the fans had the chance to see why this sport is considered to be one of the most exciting paralympic sports.

In the third period, the Juniors added to their lead when Guillaume Asselin scored again in 9:49 from defenseman Xavier Ouellet and Loïk Poudrier—his second point of the night. It was a big night for Asselin as he had a total of three points, two goals and an assist. The Juniors played shutdown defense the rest of the way as they cruised to a 3-0 victory over the Baie-Comeau Drakkar.

Montreal goaltender Jake Allen was sharp as he stopped all 22 shots to record the victory and his first shutout of the season. Allen’s counterpart, Simon Giroux of the Drakkar, stopped 28 of 31 shots he faced and took the loss.

The Montreal Juniors will now be heading to Baie-Comeau on Saturday October 10th at 7PM and to Chicoutimi on Sunday October 11th before coming home for two games in three days against Cape Breton’s Screaming Eagles on Wednesday October 14th and Patrick Roy’s Remparts Friday October 16th. Both encounters will be at 7:35PM.
