Juniors 6, Mooseheads 0 in Penalty Riddled Game 2 of QMJHL Playoffs

Written by Nick Murdocco. Posted in Blogs - Nick Murdocco

Montreal JuniorsThe Montreal Juniors easily skated to a 6-0 drubbing of the Halifax Mooseheads last Friday night and now have a 2-0 series lead in the first round of the QMJHL 2011 playoffs. They now head to Halifax for games 3,4 and 5 (if necessary).

Montreal got it done with even strength, powerplay and even a shorthanded marker on a beautiful breakaway effort by team captain Nicolas Chouinard in the third frame.

In what appears to be a negative trend in the QMJHL playoffs, dirty hits  and undisciplined players running wild seemed to be the order of the week and the Mooseheads were no exception.

Shortly after the Juniors made it 4-0,  Halifax, perhaps in frustration, perhaps in wanting to set the stage for the ensuing games back hom, took to the nasty stuff  and totalled over 30 minutes of penalties in the 3rd period alone including 2 unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Montreal, who went 4 for 6 on the powerplay, got retribution in the best way possible, adding 2 goals to their 4-0 lead to take a good series lead into Halifax.

Read on for the official Juniors game recap.

The Montreal Juniors beat the Halifax Mooseheads by a 6 to 0 score to take a two game lead in this best-of-seven series.

In the first period, David Rose opened the scoring with his first of the playoffs. Louis Leblanc then doubled his team’s lead in the following frame, with his second of the playoffs.

In the third period, the Montreal offense really went to work, scoring four times. First, Nicolas Chouinard scored his second of the playoffs on a shorthanded breakaway. Then, Jérémy Gouchie notched his first of the postseason, followed by Louis Leblanc, his second of the game, and Raphaël Pouliot, his first of the playoffs.

Halifax goaltender Frédéric Piché stopped 28 of the 34 pucks fired his way, while Montreal’s Jean-François Bérubé turned away all 31 shots he faced. Jean-François Bérubé(MTL), Nicolas Chouinard  (MTL) and Louis Leblanc (MTL) were respectively named first, second and third star of the game.

The series now shifts to Halifax for game three on Tuesday, March 29th at 6:00pm eastern.
