Impact to Face RailHawks in Semi-Finals after Win Over Aztex

Written by Nick Murdocco. Posted in Blogs - Nick Murdocco

The Montreal Impact are heading to the USSF D-2 Semi-finals.

In what is appearing to be a trend, Ali Gerba scored twice (4th and 49th minute) and stalwart striker Eduardo Sebrango scored another game-winning goal (89th minute) to lead Montreal to a 3-2 (5-2 aggregate) win against the Austin Aztex, Saturday night at House Park, in Austin Texas.

The Impact will now have to regroup and face a team that has been a thorn in their side, the Carolina RailHawks, in the next round of the playoffs. Carolina, which beat the Minnesota Stars 4-0 (4-0 on aggregates) Saturday, has a 2-1-1 record this season against  Montreal.

Impact fans will also recall the rivalry built last year when these two teams met 3 times in their last 6 games of the season as they were jockeying for playoff positions and the tally going 1-1-1 in the 3 meetings..

Gerba opened the scoring in the 4th minute and Impact ‘keeper, Matt Jordan was spectacular in a penalty kick save only minutes later,  but one has to wonder if Jordan didn’t injure his groin on that attempt or in the subsequent saves he was called upon to make. In either case, Jordan had to leave the game in the latter stages of the game as he could no longer endure the pain.

The Impact never trailed in the game or on aggregate as the Aztex did get one back, but Gerba became the first player in club history to score two goals in two consecutive playoff matches and Eddy Sebrango scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute with a powerful shot in the top of the net. This marked the 6th game-winning goal for Sebrango with the Impact.

Game one of the semi-final series against the Carolina RailHawks will take place this Thursday night at Saputo Stadium at 7:30pm and will then move to Cary, on Sunday October 17.
