Impact Start Game With Rare Lead, But Lose in Extra Time To Vancouver
The Montreal Impact went into their match against the first place Vancouver Whitecaps with the hopes of coming to within 1 point of their Canadian rivals, however, 2 goals by the ‘Caps, including the winner in extra time now leaves Montreal 7 points in Vancouver’s dust.
Strong would be an understatement to describe the way the Impact came on in the first half. The game was not even 3 minutes old when Tony Donatelli headed a Patrick Leduc free kick past Jay Nolly to give the home team a rare 1-0 lead. Montreal would keep the pressure on throughout the half with Peter Byers missing multiple opportunities to add to the lead as well as Donatelli being literally robbed by Nolly on another attempt, a point blank shot, to double Montreal’s lead.
The secons half was another story. Either Montreal was disheartened from the previous half’s result, or Vancouver, playing with midfielders at the strikers position, fed off the accomplishment of braving the storm, made it a perfect condition to generate a Vancouver comeback.
Montreal did have 2 opportunities (one a goal) called back by perhaps, questionable offside calls, however, in the end, Montreal went through this game with 3 points, as to 1 point, to none as their sole goal, Donatelli’s 4th of the season, was not enough for the NASL’s 1st place Vancouver Whitecaps.
