Impact Roll Over Rowdies 3-0
Well, the Montreal Impact are doing their part.
With the convincing and inspired 3-0 win yesterday afternoon against the Tampa Bay Rowdies, the Impact’s chances for a playoff berth got much better. Tampa, with the loss are now officially eliminated from the post-season.
Tensions were high from the start with both teams knowing full well what was at stake which was evident in the fact that 3 yellow cards were handed out before the game was 10 minutes old.
One of the fouls resulted in golden-boy penalty kicker Tony Donatelli getting a chance to extend his PK streak to 3 for the season, and did, giving the Impact the much important early 1-0 lead at the 10th minute.
Ali “Baba” Gerba extended his point scoring streak to 5 games and notched another 2 goals (45th and 83rd minutes) including a Pele-esque scissor kick volley off a corner kick to cement the Impact victory and increase their chances at the second season.
You never want to pin your hopes on the opponents losing in order to advance, (case in point: St Louis did not lose to Austin the night before, stifling the Impact’s chances to clinch with the win yesterday) however here is the present scenario that would need to occur in order for the Impact to clinch:
- Montreal can create their own destiny by earning at least a tie in either of their last 2 regular season games OR
- St Louis MC does not win ALL of their 3 remaining games.
Read on for the official Impact game recap.
