Impact Now Winless in 5 as time Dwindles on 2010 season
The Montreal Impact looked poised to stay in this one against the Rochester Rhinos last Saturday night. They managed a game tying extra time goal at the end of the first half, however an all too frequent late goal given up in the 83rd minute led to the Impact’s 5th winless game in a time when every point is precious.
The good news if there is any to be had, is that striker, yes striker, Eduardo Sebrango got a goal for the unexplainable impotent Impact offense, however as has been the case in all too many games, one goal is not enough for the victory.
Needless to say, it is not against the league leaders that a team could hope to commence a string of wins, but the Impact do not get to choose their opponents, making the 0-0 draw Vs Baltimore at home the previous Wednesday a harder pill to swallow.
It was a tough loss,” stated Sebrango. “We gave everything tonight, but it wasn’t enough. We are disappointed with this loss, after tying it up and showing good things on the field, especially in the second half.”
“After an even first half, we played better than Rochester in the second half, but they scored,” mentioned Impact head coach Marc Dos Santos. “It’s too bad because we deserved a better result tonight.”
Don’t look at Impact goaltending as the scapegoat here. Matt Jordan faced 10 shots during the game and had to make some timely saves just to keep his team in it. He was also the reason why the Baltimore game ended in a tie, not because he was overly busy (he faced 3 shots) but despite it. After seeing little in the way of touches, Jordan was called upon, again in the late stages of the game to come up big, making back to back saves to preserve the tie.
The issue here is perhaps the combination of lack of depth and a turnstile roster that has seen many players change address. At the beginning of the season, In came Philippe Billy, Felipe Soares and Reda Agourram, then the slow but steady exodus of Cedric Jocqueviel,Stefano Pesoli, Tyler Hemming, Roberto Brown and Peter Byers. And to replace them, in come Wesely Charles, Ali Gerba, Richard Pelletier and Antonio Ribeiro.
Hard to gel when you are constantly changing linemates and in some cases, good friends.
While the Imapct are presently just out of a playoff spot, they are numerically still not out of the hunt for postseason play. The next 3 games of the remaining 7 in the schedule will tell them as well as their fans, whether to call it a season or not.
