Impact Guaranteed Playoff Spot
With Montreal's recent 5 game unbeaten streak and a favourable schedule ahead of them, as well Miami FC's improbable task of needing to win every game left on their schedule if they were to keep their playoff hopes alive, it was only a matter of time before this situation came to a head. The Montreal Impact got the help they needed tonight as Miami lost 2-1 to Rochester, thus numerically eliminating them from playoff contention.
Montreal could have clinched a playoff spot themselves and simultaneously end Miami's bid for the postseason with a win Wednesday night against the visiting Vancouver Whitecaps, however now, the onus will be more on placement in the standings, as Vancouver, Montreal and Rochester could jockey for positioning between 5th, 6th and 7th place overall.

MONTREAL – With three regular season matches to play, the Montreal Impact clinched a spot in the playoffs Tuesday for the 8th consecutive season. Miami FC, which lost 2-1 against the Rochester Rhinos, Tuesday at Lockhart Stadium, in Fort Lauderdale, secured the Impact’s qualification in the playoffs.
The quarterfinal round will be played between September 23 and 27 under the following format: 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5. Teams will compete in two-leg aggregate goal series with the three winners advancing to semifinals. The winner of the Commissioner’s Cup (regular season champion) will earn a bye for the semifinal round.
Should there be a tie between two teams in the standings, the following tie-breakers will determine the final standings: head-to-head results, total season wins, season goal differential and total goals scored.
The Impact clinched two playoff championships in 1994 and 2004.
The Impact will play its next game at home against the Whitecaps, Wednesday, at Saputo Stadium, at 7:30 pm (CKAC Sports, THE TEAM 990, USLlive.com). Montreal will then host the Minnesota Thunder, Sunday, September 13 (3:30 pm, CKAC Sports, THE TEAM 990, USLlive.com), and will finish the regular season by facing the RailHawks, Friday, September 18, in Cary (7 pm, USLlive.com).
