Impact Bolster D With Wesley Charles

Written by Nick Murdocco. Posted in Blogs - Nick Murdocco

Just after their disappointing  2-1 loss to the Baltimore Crystal Palace on the 18th, the  Montreal Impact needed some form of good news to rally the troops and fans alike. The announcement of the signing of defender Wesley Charles for the rest of the 2010 season, could have very well been that.

Impact Technical director Nick De Santis knew he had to bolster the central defender position and explained Charles acquisition this way: “After the departures of Joqueviel and Pesoli, we have been on the lookout for a centre back and Wesley Charles was our best option. With Nevio (Pizzolitto) and Hicham (Aaboubou), we now have more depth at that position. Wesley knows the league very well. He is an experienced player who has won a championship. He knows what it takes to win. Right from his first practice with the team, he has had a great attitude and he has been a positive presence. Now his challenge is to demonstrate and prove what he is capable of doing.”

Charles, 34 was quoted as saying right from the get-go that he was expecting a lot from his teammates and in turn, they could expect a lot from him.

Charles is originally from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. He played with the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2008 and 2009, helping the club win the playoff championship in 2008. That same year, he was selected to the league’s second all-star team. Prior to his stint with Vancouver, he played over 10 years and 250 games in Ireland’s first division with the Slido Rovers, the Bray Wanderers and with Galway United.

Internationally, Charles played over 90 games with the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines national team, most notably in qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup.

Charles is expected to be in the line-up during Wednesday’s game against St. Louis AC, at Saputo Stadium.
