Habs Claim D Jay Leech off Re-entry Waivers

Written by Nick Murdocco. Posted in Blogs - Nick Murdocco

The Canadiens have acquired another defenseman, and no, it’s not Chris Chelios. They have picked up Jay Leach off re-entry waivers from the New Jersey Devils.

It is also being reported that Alex Henry is being taken of the IR and sent back down to Hamilton via waivers as well.

Many are speculating that Leech may be a patch for the recently injured (yet practicing) Jaroslav Spacek or a wholesale replacement for Marc-André Bergeron, who’s defensive lapses of late far outweigh any offensive threat he has mustered to date. It appears, however,  more likely that Leech, who was already playing in the Devils’ AHL affiliate, will join the Hamilton Bulldogs.

Please read on for the official Habs release.

MONTREAL (November 6, 2009) – Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced today that defenseman Jay Leach was claimed off re-entry waivers from the New Jersey Devils.

Leach, 30, has amassed 3 points (3 assists) and served 10 penalty minutes in 12 games with the AHL Lowell Devils this season. Since 2005-06, the Syracuse, New York native registered 1 point (1 assist) with an even +/- rating and 28 penalty minutes in 28 career regular-season games in the NHL, with Boston, Tampa Bay, and New Jersey. Leach played in 24 games with the Devils in 2008-09.

The 6’05’’, 225 lbs defenseman who shoots left was the Phoenix Coyotes fifth round pick (115th overall) in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. He totalled 480 penalty minutes in 353 regular season games in the AHL.
