I'll say it again, if only to calm myself down. This is only the pre-season so there's no need to get excited about these games. But if not for the games themselves, with many, many players who will not make the big team, we can at least get excited for the mentality of the team, the work effort and the individuals, old and new, who are getting themselves noticed.

Montreal came back from a 2-0 deficit to win it at home in overtime on a wicked Alex Kovalev backhand against Tomas Vokoun while a thinner, meaner, leaner Cary Price stopped all shots he faced against the Panthers snipers. Catch Mike Boone of the Gazette's game notes and insights on the players that shone.

For some, the party will end today as coach Carbonneau and his staff are expected to tell approximately 22 of the 52 players that it's time to hit the dusty trail. This week's set of games, all at home on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, against the Redwings, Bruins and Wild respectively, should give us a better look at the 2008-2009 team to be.
