Georges Laraque, Why Do You Forsake Us?

Written by Nick Murdocco. Posted in Blogs - Nick Murdocco

As heard on the "Sunday Sermon" during the "Franchise Weekend Morning Show" on THE TEAM990.

I want to go on the record as saying that I was a fan of BGL, but is it not time for the Canadiens to revisit the whole Georges Laraque situation?

Laraque has played in only 25 of the Canadiens’ 46 games this season, being either a healthy scratch or injured for roughly the other half.

Now, by “play” I mean he received a whole 5:36 of average ice time per game.

In that span, Laraque has amassed a grand total of 2 assists and rifled an amazing zero shots on net.

Now, I know Laraque was not acquired for his scoring touch, but as far as his pugilistic prowess is concerned, the “supposed” heavyweight champ has a whopping 4 fights this season,

His record?  1 win, 1 loss and two draws. Impressive, right?! And those fights only happen if and when his sparring partner accepts, notarizes and RSVP’s the champ’s request to throw down based on The Laraque Code.

Some will argue that the mere threat of Laraque on the bench is just cause for his acquisition. I would argue that I don’t recall the Canadiens being any worse for wear in the 19 games where Laraque was nowhere near that bench.

Now what can you do with Laraque? I’m not a GM, nor do I play one on TV but unless BGL pulls a 180 as far as his health and his truculence on the ice are concerned,  the options range from  asking him to waive his NTC, waiving him outright, buying him out or asking him if he’s thought of retirement lately..

I mean, his injuries that occur usually right after every game he plays have to be a sign that he just can’t do it anymore right?

Some say that Georges is a proud man and needs to feel like he’s needed or appreciated and this is what motivates him. He even said he wanted to be able to do more on this team. I honestly believed him. He even looked like he meant it in an inspired game against the Panthers the other night, but lo and behold he now has an upper body injury.

I want BGL to be the player I thought the Habs were getting when the signed him 2 years ago, the one that instilled fear in all other teams…

Or, I want what’s best for both sides via one of the options I mentioned above.

And while I’m at it, I’d also like a Ferrari.
